Roy Bates
Roy Bates was a British adventurer and former soldier, best known for founding the micronation of Sealand in 1967. He occupied an abandoned World War II fort in the North Sea, declaring it an independent state. Bates aimed to create a haven for those seeking freedom from government regulations.
Bates' claim to sovereignty led to various legal battles, particularly with the United Kingdom. Despite never being officially recognized as a nation, Sealand gained attention for its unique status and Bates' efforts to establish a self-governing community. He remained a prominent figure in the micronation until his death in 2012.
