Roger B. Chaffee was an American astronaut and naval aviator born on February 15, 1931. He was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1963 and was part of the Apollo 1 mission, which tragically ended in a cabin fire during a pre-launch test on January 27, 1967. Chaffee, along with his crewmates Virgil "Gus" Grissom and Edward H. White II, lost their lives in this accident.
Before joining NASA, Chaffee served in the U.S. Navy and earned a degree in aeronautical engineering from Purdue University. He was known for his dedication to space exploration and his contributions to the early years of the Apollo program.
