Edward White was an American astronaut and the first person to conduct a spacewalk, also known as an extravehicular activity (EVA). This historic event took place on June 3, 1965, during NASA's Gemini 4 mission. White spent about 23 minutes outside the spacecraft, demonstrating the feasibility of working in space.
Born on June 14, 1930, in San Antonio, Texas, White was a U.S. Air Force pilot before joining NASA. Tragically, he lost his life in the Apollo 1 accident on January 27, 1967, along with two other astronauts, while preparing for a mission to the Moon.
