Reverend John Eliot
Reverend John Eliot (1604-1690) was an English Puritan minister known for his missionary work among the Native American tribes in New England. He is often referred to as the "Apostle to the Indians" for his efforts to convert them to Christianity and to teach them English. Eliot established several praying towns, where Native Americans could live in a Christian community.
Eliot also played a significant role in translating the Bible into the Massachusett language, making it accessible to the Native Americans. His translation, completed in 1663, was the first Bible printed in North America. Eliot's work laid the foundation for future interactions between European settlers and Native Americans.
