Red Queen
The "Red Queen" is a concept derived from the Red Queen character in Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking-Glass." In the story, she famously states that it takes all the running you can do to stay in the same place. This idea has been adapted in various fields, including biology and evolutionary theory, to describe the constant evolutionary arms race between competing species.
In evolutionary biology, the Red Queen Hypothesis suggests that species must continuously adapt and evolve not just for reproductive advantage but also to survive against ever-evolving opposing species, such as predators and parasites. This ongoing struggle drives diversity and adaptation in ecosystems.
