Red Elm
Red Elm, also known as Ulmus rubra, is a deciduous tree native to North America. It typically grows between 50 to 80 feet tall and features a broad, rounded crown. The tree is recognized for its distinctive reddish-brown bark and serrated leaves, which turn yellow in the fall.
This species thrives in a variety of soil types, often found in floodplains and along riverbanks. Red Elm wood is valued for its strength and durability, making it suitable for furniture and flooring. However, the tree is susceptible to diseases like Dutch elm disease, which has significantly impacted its population.
