Reactance
Reactance is a psychological phenomenon where individuals resist or oppose perceived threats to their freedoms or choices. When people feel that their autonomy is being restricted, they may react by asserting their independence, often leading to behaviors that contradict the imposed restrictions. This response can occur in various situations, such as in response to rules, regulations, or social pressures.
The concept of reactance is often studied in the field of psychology and is linked to the work of Jack Brehm, who introduced the theory in the 1960s. It explains why people may engage in rebellious behavior or make choices that go against their best interests when they feel their freedom is compromised.
