Rack Railways
Rack railways are specialized rail systems designed to navigate steep gradients using a toothed rack rail. This rack is positioned between the two standard rails, allowing a cogwheel on the train to grip it, providing extra traction. This design enables trains to climb steep hills that would be impossible for conventional railways.
These railways are often found in mountainous regions and are used for both passenger and freight transport. Famous examples include the Cogwheel Railway in Switzerland and the Mount Washington Cog Railway in the United States. Rack railways are essential for accessing remote areas and scenic landscapes.
