Quilombo
A Quilombo is a settlement founded by escaped enslaved people in Brazil during the colonial period. These communities were established in remote areas, often in forests or mountains, where the inhabitants could live freely and independently. Quilombos became symbols of resistance against slavery and oppression.
The most famous Quilombo is Quilombo dos Palmares, which existed from the late 16th century to the late 17th century. It was a large and organized community that resisted Portuguese colonization. Today, Quilombos are recognized as important cultural and historical sites, representing the struggle for freedom and the preservation of African heritage in Brazil.
