Palmares
Palmares was a settlement in Brazil that existed during the 17th century, primarily inhabited by escaped enslaved Africans. It became a symbol of resistance against slavery and colonial oppression. The community was located in the northeastern region of Brazil, in the state of Alagoas, and was known for its diverse population, which included Africans, Indigenous peoples, and some Europeans.
The most famous leader of Palmares was Zumbi dos Palmares, who became a national hero in Brazil for his fight against slavery. The settlement was eventually destroyed by Portuguese forces in 1694, but its legacy continues to inspire movements for freedom and equality in Brazil and beyond.
