Public Interest Litigation
Public Interest Litigation (PIL) is a legal mechanism that allows individuals or groups to file lawsuits in the interest of the public, rather than for personal gain. It aims to protect the rights of marginalized communities and address issues affecting society, such as environmental concerns, human rights violations, and social justice. PILs can be initiated by any citizen, often with the support of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
In many countries, including India, PILs have become an essential tool for promoting accountability and transparency in governance. Courts often entertain these cases to ensure that justice is accessible to all, especially those who may not have the resources to pursue legal action on their own.
