Proteus Anguinus
Proteus anguinus, commonly known as the olm, is a cave-dwelling amphibian found primarily in the subterranean waters of the Dinaric Alps in Europe. It is notable for its elongated body, which can reach lengths of up to 30 centimeters, and its pale, almost translucent skin. The olm has adapted to life in darkness, resulting in the loss of its eyesight, but it possesses heightened senses of smell and hearing.
This unique species is fully aquatic and primarily feeds on small invertebrates, such as worms and insects. The olm is an important indicator of the health of its aquatic ecosystem and is considered a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and pollution. Conservation efforts are underway to protect its natural environment.
