Proteostasis
Proteostasis refers to the balance and maintenance of proteins within a cell. It involves the processes that ensure proteins are correctly folded, assembled, and degraded when necessary. This balance is crucial for cellular function and overall health, as misfolded or damaged proteins can lead to diseases.
The proteostasis network includes various components, such as chaperones, which assist in proper protein folding, and proteasomes, which degrade unwanted proteins. Disruptions in proteostasis can contribute to conditions like Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, highlighting the importance of maintaining protein homeostasis for cellular integrity and function.
