Progressive Muscular Atrophy
Progressive Muscular Atrophy (PMA) is a rare neurological disorder that primarily affects the motor neurons in the spinal cord. It leads to muscle weakness and atrophy, particularly in the hands and legs, as the motor neurons degenerate and die. Unlike other forms of motor neuron disease, PMA does not typically affect cognitive function.
The exact cause of PMA is not well understood, but it is believed to involve genetic and environmental factors. Symptoms usually develop gradually and can vary in severity. While there is currently no cure, treatments focus on managing symptoms and improving quality of life for those affected.
