Motor Neuron Diseases (MNDs) are a group of progressive neurological disorders that affect the motor neurons, which are the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movements. These diseases lead to muscle weakness, atrophy, and eventually paralysis, impacting daily activities such as walking, speaking, and swallowing. The most common type of MND is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
The exact cause of MNDs is often unknown, but genetic and environmental factors may play a role. Diagnosis typically involves clinical evaluation, electromyography, and imaging studies. While there is currently no cure for MNDs, treatments focus on managing symptoms and improving quality of life for affected individuals.
