Presidential Records Act
The Presidential Records Act (PRA) is a U.S. law enacted in 1978 that governs the official records of Presidents and Vice Presidents. It establishes that records created or received by the President in the course of their official duties are the property of the United States, not the individual. This law aims to ensure transparency and accountability in government by preserving these records for public access.
Under the PRA, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is responsible for managing and preserving presidential records. After a president leaves office, their records are transferred to NARA, where they are organized and made available to the public, promoting historical research and understanding of the presidency.
