Potawatomi Tribe
The Potawatomi Tribe is a Native American group originally from the Great Lakes region, particularly in areas that are now part of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. They are part of the larger Algonquian-speaking peoples and have a rich cultural heritage that includes traditional practices, languages, and crafts. The tribe historically engaged in agriculture, hunting, and fishing, which were essential for their sustenance.
In the 19th century, many Potawatomi were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands through treaties and government policies. Today, the Potawatomi Tribe is recognized as a sovereign nation, with several federally recognized bands, including the Citizen Potawatomi Nation and the Forest County Potawatomi. They continue to preserve their culture and traditions while participating in modern economic activities.
