Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a skin condition characterized by darkened patches that appear after an inflammatory event, such as acne, eczema, or injury. This occurs when the skin produces excess melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, in response to inflammation.
The affected areas can vary in size and may take weeks to months to fade. While PIH is not harmful, it can be distressing for those affected. Treatments often include topical creams, chemical peels, and sun protection to help reduce the appearance of dark spots and promote an even skin tone.
