Polyvagal Theory
Polyvagal Theory is a psychological framework developed by Stephen Porges that explains how our autonomic nervous system influences our emotional and social behavior. It emphasizes the role of the vagus nerve, which connects the brain to the body, in regulating our responses to stress and safety. According to this theory, our nervous system has three main states: safety, danger, and life threat, each affecting our behavior and interactions.
The theory suggests that when we feel safe, we can engage socially and connect with others. In contrast, when we perceive danger, our body may respond with fight-or-flight reactions, or in extreme cases, a freeze response. Understanding these states can help improve mental health and interpersonal relationships.
