Polyploid
Polyploid refers to a condition in which an organism has more than two complete sets of chromosomes. Most animals and plants are diploid, meaning they have two sets of chromosomes, one from each parent. In contrast, polyploid organisms can have three (triploid), four (tetraploid), or even more sets, which can lead to increased genetic diversity and adaptability.
Polyploidy is common in the plant kingdom, where it can result in larger cell sizes and greater vigor. Many cultivated crops, such as wheat and strawberries, are polyploid, which can enhance their yield and resilience. This phenomenon can occur naturally or be induced through various breeding techniques.
