Polyominoes
Polyominoes are geometric shapes formed by connecting one or more equal-sized squares edge to edge. The simplest polyomino is a monomino, which consists of a single square. As more squares are added, they create different types of polyominoes, such as dominoes (two squares), trominoes (three squares), and tetrominoes (four squares). Tetrominoes are particularly famous as they are used in the popular video game Tetris.
Polyominoes can be classified based on the number of squares they contain, leading to various categories like pentominoes (five squares) and hexominoes (six squares). They can be arranged in numerous configurations, making them a subject of interest in recreational mathematics and combinatorial design. Polyominoes also have applications in areas such as computer science, puzzle design, and tiling problems.
