Pleomorphic Adenoma
Pleomorphic adenoma, often referred to as a benign tumor, is the most common type of tumor found in the salivary glands. It typically arises in the parotid gland, but can also occur in other glands like the submandibular and sublingual glands. This tumor is characterized by a mix of different cell types, which is why it is called "pleomorphic," meaning "many shapes."
These tumors usually grow slowly and are painless, making them often go unnoticed for years. While they are non-cancerous, they can sometimes become larger and may require surgical removal to prevent complications or recurrence. Regular monitoring is recommended to ensure they do not change in nature.
