Pistol Shrimp
The pistol shrimp is a small marine crustacean known for its unique ability to produce a loud snapping sound. This sound is created by rapidly closing its oversized claw, which generates a cavitation bubble that collapses with a sharp crack. The noise can reach up to 210 decibels, making it one of the loudest sounds in the ocean.
Pistol shrimp are typically found in warm, shallow waters and often live in burrows alongside gobies, a type of fish. They have a symbiotic relationship with these fish, where the shrimp digs and maintains the burrow while the goby acts as a lookout for predators.
