Pilgrimage of Grace
The Pilgrimage of Grace was a popular uprising in England that took place in 1536. It was primarily a response to the religious reforms initiated by King Henry VIII, particularly the dissolution of the monasteries. Many people, including commoners and nobles, were concerned about the loss of religious institutions and the changes to traditional practices.
The rebellion began in Yorkshire and quickly spread to other northern counties. Protesters sought to restore the old Catholic faith and address grievances against the crown. Although the uprising was initially successful, it was eventually suppressed by the king's forces, leading to harsh reprisals against the participants.
