Phoenix Islands Protected Area
The Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) is a large marine protected area located in the central Pacific Ocean, covering approximately 408,250 square kilometers. Established in 2008, it is one of the largest marine reserves in the world and is part of the Republic of Kiribati. PIPA aims to conserve the unique biodiversity of its coral reefs, islands, and marine ecosystems, which are home to various species, including seabirds and endangered turtles.
PIPA is recognized for its ecological significance and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area is crucial for scientific research and conservation efforts, providing a refuge for marine life and helping to maintain the health of the Pacific Ocean. Its remote location and strict protection measures help safeguard its natural resources from overfishing and other human activities.
