Phiona Mutesi
Phiona Mutesi is a Ugandan chess player who gained international recognition for her achievements in the game. Born in 1996 in Kampala, Uganda, she faced many challenges growing up in a poor neighborhood. Despite these obstacles, she learned to play chess at a young age and quickly excelled, becoming the first female chess player to earn the title of Woman Candidate Master in Uganda.
Mutesi's life story was popularized in the book and film titled The Queen of Katwe, which highlights her journey from the slums of Kampala to competing in international chess tournaments. Her determination and success have inspired many, showcasing the power of perseverance and talent.
