Phantom Pain
Phantom pain is a sensation of pain that feels like it is coming from a body part that has been amputated or is no longer present. People experiencing phantom pain may feel discomfort, burning, or itching in the area where the limb used to be. This phenomenon can occur shortly after the loss of the limb or even years later.
The exact cause of phantom pain is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve changes in the brain and nervous system. When a limb is removed, the brain may still receive signals from the nerves that once connected to that limb, leading to the perception of pain. Treatments for phantom pain can include medications, physical therapy, and psychological support.
