Pernicious Anemia
Pernicious Anemia is a type of anemia caused by the body's inability to absorb vitamin B12 due to a lack of intrinsic factor, a protein produced in the stomach. This vitamin is essential for the production of red blood cells, and its deficiency can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and pale skin.
The condition is often autoimmune, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the cells that produce intrinsic factor. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to check B12 levels and intrinsic factor antibodies. Treatment usually includes vitamin B12 injections or high-dose oral supplements to restore normal levels.
