Perioikoi
The term "Perioikoi" refers to a group of free inhabitants in ancient Sparta who lived in surrounding areas but were not full citizens. They were responsible for various economic activities, including trade and craftsmanship, which supported the Spartan economy. Although they had some rights, they were not allowed to participate in the political life of Sparta.
Perioikoi played a crucial role in the military as well, often serving as soldiers alongside the Spartan citizens. Their status was distinct from that of the Helots, who were serfs bound to the land. This unique position allowed the Perioikoi to maintain a degree of autonomy while contributing to the Spartan state.
