Periodic Paralysis
Periodic Paralysis is a rare genetic condition that causes episodes of muscle weakness or paralysis. These episodes can last from minutes to days and may be triggered by factors such as stress, exercise, or certain foods. The condition primarily affects the skeletal muscles, which are responsible for voluntary movements.
There are different types of Periodic Paralysis, including Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis and Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis, named for the levels of potassium in the blood during episodes. Diagnosis typically involves a medical history review, physical examination, and blood tests to monitor electrolyte levels. Treatment may include lifestyle changes and medications to manage symptoms.
