People's Temple
The People's Temple was a religious organization founded in the 1950s by Jim Jones in the United States. It initially promoted social justice, racial equality, and communal living, attracting a diverse group of followers. The group gained notoriety for its controversial practices and beliefs, which included a strong emphasis on loyalty to Jones.
In the late 1970s, the People's Temple relocated to Guyana, where they established a settlement called Jonestown. The group became infamous after a mass suicide in November 1978, resulting in the deaths of over 900 members. This tragic event highlighted the dangers of cults and extreme religious movements.
