Pemberton's French Wine Coca
Pemberton's French Wine Coca was a medicinal tonic created in the late 19th century by John Stith Pemberton, a pharmacist in Atlanta, Georgia. It combined coca leaf extract, which contains cocaine, with wine, and was marketed as a cure for various ailments, including headaches and fatigue. The drink was inspired by the popularity of coca wine in Europe.
In 1886, due to temperance movements and changing laws, Pemberton reformulated the drink to remove alcohol, resulting in the creation of Coca-Cola. This new beverage retained the coca leaf extract but replaced the wine with carbonated water, leading to its rise as a popular soft drink.
