Pelagos
Pelagos is a marine protected area located in the Mediterranean Sea, primarily between France and Italy. Established in 1999, it covers approximately 87,500 square kilometers and is known for its rich biodiversity, including various species of marine mammals, such as bottlenose dolphins and sperm whales. The area aims to conserve these species and their habitats while promoting sustainable use of marine resources.
The Pelagos Sanctuary is managed by a collaboration between France, Italy, and Monaco. It serves as a critical habitat for many migratory species and plays a vital role in marine conservation efforts. The sanctuary also supports research and monitoring activities to better understand and protect the unique marine ecosystem.
