Homonym: Pediculus Humanus Capitis (Lice)
Pediculus humanus capitis, commonly known as head lice, are tiny parasitic insects that infest the scalp and hair of humans. They feed on blood and can cause itching and discomfort. Head lice are most prevalent among children, but anyone can get them through close contact or sharing personal items like hats and combs.
These insects are about the size of a sesame seed and are usually grayish-white or tan in color. They lay eggs, called nits, which attach to hair shafts close to the scalp. Effective treatments include over-the-counter shampoos and thorough cleaning of personal items to prevent reinfestation.
