Paryaya
Paryaya is a traditional practice in the Indian state of Karnataka, particularly in the city of Udupi. It refers to the system of rotating leadership among the Ashta Mathas, which are eight monastic institutions established by the saint Madhvacharya. Each Matha takes turns managing the temple and its activities for a specific period, usually two years.
During the Paryaya period, the head of the Matha, known as the Paryaya Swamiji, oversees rituals, festivals, and the administration of the temple. This system promotes cooperation and unity among the Mathas while ensuring that the spiritual and cultural heritage of the region is preserved and celebrated.
