Panchen Lamas
The Panchen Lamas are important spiritual leaders in Tibetan Buddhism, specifically within the Gelug school. They are considered the second-highest ranking lamas after the Dalai Lama. The title "Panchen" means "great scholar," reflecting their role in religious teachings and practices.
Traditionally, the Panchen Lama is responsible for recognizing the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama and has significant influence over Tibetan Buddhist affairs. The most famous Panchen Lama, the 10th, was recognized in 1995, but his whereabouts have been a subject of international concern since his abduction by the Chinese government.
