Panchen Lama
The Panchen Lama is a significant figure in Tibetan Buddhism, regarded as the second-highest spiritual leader after the Dalai Lama. Traditionally, the Panchen Lama is responsible for recognizing the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama and plays a crucial role in Tibetan religious affairs.
The current Panchen Lama, Gendun Choekyi Nyima, was recognized by the 14th Dalai Lama in 1995 but has been missing since his abduction by the Chinese government. The Chinese authorities have appointed their own Panchen Lama, Bainqen Erdini Qoigyijabu, which has led to ongoing disputes over legitimacy and authority within Tibetan Buddhism.
