PRK, or Photorefractive Keratectomy, is a type of laser eye surgery designed to correct vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. During the procedure, a laser is used to reshape the cornea, the clear front part of the eye, allowing light to focus more accurately on the retina. This can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses.
The PRK procedure typically involves removing the outer layer of the cornea, known as the epithelium, before applying the laser treatment. Recovery may take a few days, and patients might experience some discomfort initially. However, many achieve improved vision within a week or two after the surgery.
