Overland Campaign
The Overland Campaign was a series of battles fought during the American Civil War in 1864, primarily between the forces of Union General Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The campaign aimed to engage Lee's army in Virginia and ultimately capture the Confederate capital of Richmond. Key battles included the Battle of the Wilderness, Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, and Battle of Cold Harbor.
The campaign was marked by intense fighting and significant casualties on both sides. Despite the heavy losses, Grant's strategy focused on attrition, aiming to wear down Lee's forces over time. The Overland Campaign set the stage for subsequent Union victories and contributed to the eventual defeat of the Confederacy.
