Battle of the Wilderness
The Battle of the Wilderness was fought from May 5 to May 7, 1864, during the American Civil War. It took place in a dense forest in Virginia, where the Union Army, led by General Ulysses S. Grant, faced off against the Confederate Army commanded by General Robert E. Lee. The battle was marked by fierce fighting and heavy casualties on both sides, with neither army achieving a decisive victory.
Despite the lack of a clear winner, the battle was significant as it marked the beginning of a series of confrontations known as the Overland Campaign. Grant's strategy aimed to engage Lee's forces continuously, ultimately leading to the Union's advance toward Richmond, the Confederate capital. The Wilderness's challenging terrain contributed to the chaos and confusion of the battle.
