Our Lady of the Guard
Our Lady of the Guard is a title given to the Virgin Mary, recognized as the patroness of sailors and those at sea. This devotion originated in the 16th century in Genoa, Italy, where a church was built in her honor on a hill overlooking the harbor. The image of Our Lady of the Guard is often depicted holding the child Jesus and is celebrated for her protective qualities.
The feast day of Our Lady of the Guard is celebrated on September 29th. Many communities, especially those with strong maritime connections, hold processions and special masses to honor her. The devotion has spread to various countries, including the United States and Brazil, where she is venerated by many.
