Ottoman Law
Ottoman Law refers to the legal system that governed the Ottoman Empire, which lasted from the late 13th century until the early 20th century. It was a combination of Islamic law (Sharia) and customary law (Kanun), reflecting both religious and secular principles. The legal framework was designed to maintain order and justice within a diverse population, incorporating various cultural practices.
The Sultan was the ultimate authority in the legal system, supported by a network of judges known as Qadis. They interpreted and enforced laws, ensuring that both Sharia and Kanun were applied. This dual system allowed for flexibility and adaptation to changing societal needs while maintaining a cohesive legal structure.
