Ornithoptera
Ornithoptera is a genus of large butterflies found primarily in the tropical regions of New Guinea and surrounding islands. Known for their striking colors and impressive wingspans, some species can reach up to 30 centimeters (about 12 inches) across. These butterflies are often characterized by their vibrant patterns, which can include shades of blue, green, and yellow.
The life cycle of Ornithoptera includes four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult butterfly. The caterpillars typically feed on specific host plants, which are crucial for their development. As adults, they play an important role in pollination within their ecosystems.
