Orkhon River
The Orkhon River is a significant waterway in central Mongolia, flowing through the Orkhon Valley. It stretches approximately 1,124 kilometers (698 miles) and is known for its historical and cultural importance. The river is a tributary of the Selenge River, which eventually drains into Lake Baikal in Russia.
The Orkhon Valley, where the river is located, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its rich archaeological sites and historical significance. The area has been inhabited for thousands of years and is closely associated with the ancient Mongol Empire and its founder, Genghis Khan.
