Operation Vijay
Operation Vijay was the code name for India's military operation to reclaim the Kargil district in Jammu and Kashmir during the summer of 1999. The operation was launched after Pakistani soldiers and militants infiltrated the Indian side of the Line of Control. The conflict lasted from May to July, with the Indian Armed Forces aiming to recapture strategic heights.
The operation involved intense combat in difficult mountainous terrain and was marked by significant sacrifices from both sides. Ultimately, India successfully regained control of the territory, leading to a decisive victory and the withdrawal of Pakistani forces from the region.
