Operation Stalemate II
Operation Stalemate II was a military campaign during the Battle of Peleliu in World War II, conducted by the United States Marine Corps from September to November 1944. The operation aimed to capture the strategically important Peleliu Island in the Palau archipelago, which was crucial for securing airfields to support future operations in the Philippines.
The campaign faced fierce resistance from the Japanese forces, leading to heavy casualties on both sides. Despite the challenges, the U.S. forces eventually secured the island, but the high cost of the operation raised questions about its overall strategic value in the Pacific theater.
