Operation Linebacker II was a U.S. military campaign conducted during the Vietnam War from December 18 to December 29, 1972. It involved extensive bombing raids on North Vietnam, particularly targeting the capital, Hanoi, and the port city of Haiphong. The operation aimed to pressure the North Vietnamese government into negotiating a peace settlement.
The campaign utilized B-52 bombers and other aircraft to carry out strategic bombings, marking one of the heaviest aerial bombardments in the war. Despite its intensity, Operation Linebacker II faced criticism for its impact on civilians and infrastructure, ultimately leading to the Paris Peace Accords in January 1973.
