Operation Highjump
Operation Highjump was a United States Navy mission conducted in 1946-1947, aimed at establishing a permanent research presence in Antarctica. Led by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, the operation involved over 4,700 personnel, 13 ships, and multiple aircraft. The primary goals included mapping the region, conducting scientific research, and testing equipment in extreme conditions.
The operation took place in the Antarctic region, specifically around the area known as Little America. It was one of the largest Antarctic expeditions ever undertaken and contributed significantly to the understanding of the continent's geography and climate. The mission also laid the groundwork for future scientific exploration in Antarctica.
