Omar al-Bashir
Omar al-Bashir is a former Sudanese military officer and politician who served as the President of Sudan from 1989 until 2019. He came to power through a coup and was known for his authoritarian rule, which included the suppression of political opposition and civil liberties. His government faced numerous accusations of human rights violations, particularly during the Darfur conflict.
In 2009, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for al-Bashir, charging him with war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the conflict in Darfur. After months of protests against his regime, he was ousted from power in April 2019 and later faced trial for corruption and other charges.
