Oba of Abeokuta
The Oba of Abeokuta is the traditional ruler of Abeokuta, the capital city of Ogun State in Nigeria. This title is held by the Alake of Abeokuta, who plays a significant role in the cultural and historical identity of the Egba people. The Oba is responsible for preserving traditions, mediating disputes, and promoting community development.
The position of the Oba dates back to the 19th century, when the Egba people united to form a city-state. The current Oba, as of 2023, is Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo III, who was crowned in 2005. The Oba's palace serves as a center for cultural events and traditional ceremonies, reflecting the rich heritage of the region.
